This lunch & learn applies Marshall Rosenberg’s Nonviolent Communication (NVC) to deepen our understanding of interests & further “expand the pie.”
At some point in their career, most North American ADR practitioners are trained to recognize differing positions as the source of disputes & discern underlying interests (i.e. hopes, wants, wishes, dreams, values, needs, & expectations underlying positions) as the source of resolutions.
While all interests offer insight into party positions, experienced mediators may note that some interests still aggravate disputes, while others resolve more readily. NVC offers an empowering & nuanced approach: distinguishing universal needs/values as underlying BOTH interests & positions. Discerning this additional layer “expands the pie” in several ways.
